IT’S ALIVE! Wait…is it?

Disclaimer: Moving image below may gross you out.

Ever think to yourself…hey…wouldn’t it be awesome to eat a whole raw squid, but not just a whole raw squid, a whole dancing raw squid? I don’t know about you guys, but……I have never freaking thought of that. What am I? A weirdo?

But for those who happened to answer yes to that question (weirdos) or are just curious as to what the bejezzus is going on in this crazy gif of mine, here is the explanation:

The “not at all terrifying” dish before you is a Japanese dish called Odori-Don, which in Japanese translates to “dancing squid rice bowl.” As the name suggest, the dish consist of raw squid placed on top of rice, typically served with fish roe and soy sauce. My sushi experiences just won’t be the same after seeing this.

Although watching a video about this on youtube may of made my stomach turn, I actually found the science behind this dish quite fascinating. While the squid is not alive, the result of soy sauce touching the squid’s nerves can make it seems like the squid is moving. Here is a slightly more scientific explanation:

Although the squid is deceased, the squid’s cells still contain unused adenosine triphosphate (or ATP), which is responsible for triggering muscular contraction and expansion and, therefore, movement. In living squid, ATP is triggered by the central nervous system sending electrical impulses to the brain. With no brain involved, the ATP just sits dormant, and over time, dissipates, as the now-dying cell fails to create new ATP.

So why does soy sauce make ATP work? Well, soy sauce contains sodium and potassium. The sodium and potassium ions together send a similar chemical trigger to the nerves, causing the ATP to contract and expand the muscles. The result: a creepy dancing squid headliner for a meal. (Source:

So there you have it folks. If you are ever in Japan and happen to try this dish, I’d love to hear your experiences. Leave a comment below and let me know of any odd food experiences you have had.

I hope you enjoyed this random, slightly gross, slightly informative post for the day. Stay tuned for more.

Oxymoron who? Splurge it and Save it Simultaneously

Hey guys! As we all know, America is a consumer based society. And as I pondered on what activity I should spend my Fourth of July doing, it hit me. WAM! What is more American than shopping?

Photo 71

I don’t know about you guys, but I have been a shopper most of my life. Like most teens, I wanted to have all the latest gizmos, gadgets, and fashion. And yes, that is a flip phone. Mind you, this picture was taken back in the day ok. Not like there is anything wrong with a flip phone….

Any way, now that I’m a young adult and have learned the precious value of money, I have found it imperative that I find ways to indulge in my shopping needs without going broke.  If you are a super shopper like me, you probably already figured out the convenience and awesomeness of online shopping. With all the hustle and bustle of the day, it is so much easier to come home and enjoy virtual retail therapy rather than high tailing it to the mall. If you are going to do even the slightest bit of shopping this Fourth of July, let me let you in on a little secret.

Now for those of you not familiar with Ebates, let me give you a little bit of information. Ebates is a rebate site that gives you a percentage of cash back when you shop through their website at participating stores. When you visit and sign up to Ebates, you can search the store you are interested in. If it is a participating store, Ebates will have a page dedicated to that store’s site. The store page will list the percentage cash back you can earn and other available online coupons and promotions associated with their site. When you are ready to shop, all you have to do is click an available link to the store site, and Ebates will re-direct you to the actual store’s site to shop as you normally would. While you purchase your items from the store site itself, as long as you click the store link on Ebates first, Ebates will keep a tracking ticket of your purchase and add the percentage cash back to your account. For a video explanation, view the video below.

As you can see, it is a pretty simple process once you actually go on the site and check it out. This has been my secret to saving money for the past six months now, and I have already received a lot of cash back. If you guys are interested in trying it out, click the link below:

Feel free to put me down as your reference:

I promise you won’t regret it.

Have fun and have an awesome Fourth of July!

Here Comes the BOOM…

As you all know, Fourth of July is upon us. And like all good Americans, I’m sure the majority of you are going to either be getting drunk out of your minds, eating stomach combusting amounts of BBQ, playing with colorful explosives, or doing all three of these things at the same time.

Helpful Tip of the Day: Do not drink while playing with things that can potentially light you on fire. Nobody wants to see a human firework, or do they? hmmm….

Now, I’m no expert, but I have experienced my fair share of Fourth of July hullabaloo. And last year, I decided to stop by the Aquarium of the Pacific‘s Red, White, and Blue Ocean (corny much) celebration. If you haven’t been there before, definitely check it out. Hanging out with animals always makes for a fun day. A few highlights of the day include…

The Animal Friends I Made:

I will forever have a place in my heart for that emperor penguin. He was just such a sharp dresser. 😉

The Amazing Food:

The ceviche was definitely my favorite item there. It was so yummy and refreshing on a hot summer day. There was plenty of food to go around throughout the entirety of the BBQ, which was awesome for someone like me who always goes for tenths…yes I said tenths! One thing I should mention if you happen to go to this event, is that the seating goes quickly, so try to get there right when the BBQ starts.

And last highlight…bum ba da dum…

Bird Attack:

I told him to just give up the nectar, but nooooooooo. I’m glad to report no birds or humans were injured in the process.

All in all, this was a fun Fourth of July. No matter what you decide to do for your Fourth of July celebration, remember to have fun, make memories, and be safe!
